Of carp and coal
Clever fish farmers exploit the waste heat of a coal-fired power station.
The brown coal power station Jänschwalde, on the Polish border, a couple of kilometers north of Cottbus, went on stream in 1981 and was one of the most modern in East Germany. Since the beginning of 1996, the plant has produced 18 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year; and, as fish farmers have been allowed to exploit the heated waste water used to cool the plant, an additional 150 tons of carp, 60 tons of trout, and several tons of
sturgeon, perch, eels, welse and tench. In France, two brothers have gone a step further. In the Rhone valley, two hours south of Lyon by car, they opened a crocodile farm a few years ago: this is heated by the waste water from a nuclear power station.
