Soft paws across the border
German and Polish wolves are closely related
Genetic research has established that German wolves can be definitely
assigned to the Polish wolf population. In 1998 two wolves settled
on the Muskauer Heath in Saxony, and two years later produced cubs.
However, the study shows that their continuing existence will depend
largely on wolf migrations from Poland. If no wolf packs survive there,
or if the tracks they use become |
impassable, then the wolves on this side of the border have
no chance of long term survival because of the risk of in-breeding.So
the wolves have raised high expectations all around the Oberlausitz
region. (Kerstin Viering in Berliner Zeitung, 7.9.2006)
